What to Expect at the State Leadership Conference
Brittany Paulus, Ohio Association President

As the competitive events season gets underway, different thoughts start to pop into your head.  You work extremely hard to create the perfect project, or ace that test you decided to take.  Either one will get you to the State Leadership Conference, because you have worked hard.  Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about the State Leadership Conference held in March.

 1)     Is it very crowded at state?

a.      Yes, it gets crowed.  You have to be patient and willing to wait in line for food, the elevator, or registration.  It really won’t be as bad as you think it is at the time.  It gives you a chance to meet new people, and who knows?  Maybe lifelong friends.   I highly suggest leaving for your contest at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time to allow enough time to wait for the elevators.

 2)     Do the tests at the State level get much harder than at the Region level?

a.      For some yes, for some no.  It depends on the test you’re taking and how much information you already know.  The questions may be worded differently, but the concept and procedures remain the same.  Since you have already taken a similar test, the test will not be as difficult as you think it would be.  Because of the region test, you know what to expect; and the knowledge should already be in your head.

 3)     Is there time to relax at Fall Leadership Conference?

a.      While the competitive events and general sessions are the focus of the conference, there is time between events for your chapter to relax and explore Columbus.  You can catch a shuttle to the mall to shop and eat, or visit some of Ohio’s historic locations.  But you must be sure to put safety first!  Your advisor should make plans for these types of excursions, and should accompany you.

I hope these answers help clear up a few questions you might have had.  If you need anything else, feel free to contact any of your State Officers.  We are more than willing to help!
